Why explore new hiking routes in Germany?

Many of us have our favorite routes that we like to hike again and again – for me, for example, it’s the Harz Mountains. But there are so many more hiking trails in eastern Germany that are just waiting to be discovered. However, the question often arises: where do you start? How well is the route signposted? Are there steep passages or root paths that should be avoided? These uncertainties can stop you from exploring new trails.

In this series, we share our experiences with you and give you valuable tips on the most beautiful hikes in eastern Germany. We take a look at the local infrastructure – such as parking facilities and the condition of the trails – and assess whether the route is suitable for beginners, families or experienced hikers. Today we take you on an exciting tour to Arnstein Castle near Welbsleben. The Schnarcherklippen are another beautiful destination that we have already rated.

  • Duration of the hike: approx. 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Route length: 7.6 kilometers
  • Difficulty level: Easy to medium (slight climbs)
  • Starting and finishing point: Welbsleben, free parking lot

Detailed route of the hike

The hike begins in the village of Welbsleben, where there is a free parking lot. From there, the trail leads through the village before reaching a narrow field path. After a short while, this changes into a wider forest path. The first few steps immediately convey a sense of tranquillity – pastures stretch out on the right-hand side, while a steep wall runs up the forest on the left.

After a short, gentle climb, the path becomes narrower again. A slight bend to the right leads us to a yellow bridge – but we don’t cross it, instead following the forest path further uphill. The ascent remains gentle but noticeable. After a while, the forest path turns back into a dirt track and shortly afterwards we reach a junction with another path. Nevertheless, we follow the path straight ahead. The path becomes steeper here and the ascent is noticeable, which requires some stamina.

Highlight: The chestnut tree

After this climb, we come across the first highlight of the tour: an impressive old chestnut tree in the middle of the field. It looks as if it was destined for this exact spot. Here we can take a short break on the bench under the chestnut tree and enjoy the vast landscape.

Continue to Arnstein Castle

After the break, the route continues, this time slightly downhill. You soon catch sight of the first remains of Arnstein Castle before the entire castle comes into view. It is surprisingly well preserved, and it is particularly pleasing that there is hardly any graffiti or other damage. You can enter the castle on the first floor and continue up a spiral staircase. Unfortunately, access to the tower is closed, so you can’t climb it.

After enjoying the view from the castle, you can go down and optionally visit the castle cellar. It’s not particularly large and doesn’t offer much to see, but it’s worth a short detour.
